The Wedding

As I floated down the aisle,

I saw my child, then did I smile.

The sadness had left, her eyes had brightened,

Standing there, her mind enlightened.

She no longer felt the pain,

her heart no longer kept it's strain.

Because she knew I was always with her,

because she knew their love would last a millennia... and never wither.

So on this day, I gave her away,

knowing his morals would never stray,

knowing their love would never fray,

like the knot that took my love away.

No I knew they would never be so weak,

the love they shared was never meek,

to think that life could be so bleak,

to take it right there on the street.

But their love was strong, I know that now,

so when fear came rushing they did not bow.

They stood up tall and shunned him out,

with the courage I wished I had, but carry now.

She comes to see me, every so often,

comes and kneels before my coffin.

With a tear in her eye but eagerness not to cry

she says, “daddy, you did not have to die”.

Her words sent me reeling,

triggered the guilt that I was feeling.

And I came to a to a new understanding,

that fear should not have consumed my life.

Because the only thing suicide brings, is strife.

The author's comments:

One night I was coming home from a suicide prevention program. The goal of this program was to help people understand what other people that feel the weight of suicide are going through, and more importantly how to prevent it. That night changed me, I had heard so many stories of loss and deep sadness that I cried more than once. I also noticed that when a person will commit suicide they not only hurt but everyone they had an impact on in their short life. After I came to this conclusion I can home, went to my desk, and let the pen flow. It didn't take long for the poem to write itself, and I use this word because it was almost as if the poem was indeed writing itself, that i was just a vessel to put it out into the world so that other people can see what happens even if you think this world would in fact be better off without you.
