The Jump
Step one,
Breath in.
Step two,
Breath out.
Step three,
Begin.
I’m on my fourth step,
Racing towards the worn-out mat.
I’m on my fifth step,
Ready to leap.
I’m on my sixth step,
And I lift off.
Soaring through the dense air,
I glide over the bar,
Listening for the sound of a falling cylinder,
For only it can assure my success.

This piece is about a girl attempting high jump. She tells us about jumping over the bar. The poem ends as soon as she lands on the mat and leaves a cliff hanger on whether the bar fell or not. I was inspired to write this poem because of my field event that is also high jump.
