Behind the curtain
The strong smell of perfume
As it fills up the room
Bobby pins and hair barrettes,
And an “I’m gonna win” mindset.

Behind the curtain
Young women are gossipping
About her and her who are oncoming
Smiles are deceiving
She discovers that while heaving.

Behind the curtain
A girl hands off her earrings
So that the girl in front of her looks as appealing
Smiles can be healing
To a soul they have been stealing

Behind the curtain
She breathes and counts to ten
She just wishes she could be confident again
Thinking that in a dress so shiny and bright
Nothing could go wrong that night

Behind the curtain
She is given words of encouragement
They call her name and off she went
But sadly this is all in her mind
And she must do this one more time.

My background in Pageantry has inspired me to write this poem. It is a story of the first pageant I ever had attended, the things I saw, the environment.
