A Family Gathering
It’s Saturday night,
And my home is full of noise.
Music is muffled
By the sounds of laughter
That echo off the walls.
There’s food in the oven
And the smell of it slithers into every room.
The kitchen is bustling with family
Trying to prep for dinner.
The kids are squirming on the couch,
Controllers in hand,
Playing X-box until their hands cramp.
Meanwhile, the adults
Gather to gossip
And sip chilled white wine.
Dinner is done,
And we all squeeze into
A much-too-small table.
The laughter never ceases
And the gossip never stops,
Even as we all scarf down delicious food.
The leftovers get wrapped,
And goodbyes are said.
It’s Saturday night,
And my home is quiet again.
