For My People
For my people who are thought to be the golden child the perfect student teacher’s pet girl without flaws valedictorian
one who succeeds naturally one who never struggles;
For my people everywhere slaving away to their own mind
Day after day their thoughts and their worries and
Their past mistakes consuming them whole
Making it hard to think to breathe to be happy;
For my people hiding their fear of making mistakes, who bottle it up
Contain the panic box in the madness cover up the anxiety
Mask the blemishes paint over the faults
Never allowing themselves to make a miscalculation;
For my people whose minds will not be quiet the voices swirling
Chanting repeatedly that they will never be good enough
Drowning in a sea of expectations created by their own mind teachers parents
Friends enemies trainers advisors;
For my people who are giving their all to the monster within
but their effort is draining them leaving them empty
Hanging from a thread silently screaming for help
Grasping for a hand that is never there;
Break through the walls. Accept the mistakes that are inevitable. Embrace
The small failures that do no more than prepare for future success.
Find solace in the ability to mess up and rebound. Create a new mentality
That thrives off of the lessons learned. Ignore the deep fear of imperfection
And bury it with pride in the journey that is to become. Allow for the reinvention
Which allows risks to be taken. Grant the permission to be human.

This piece was inspired by Margaret Walker's original piece "For My People". In this piece, the people that are 'mine' are people that are perfectionists.
