As I paint my lips red and my cheeks pink,
As I style my hair I look in the mirror.
Expectantly waiting to feel different,
Waiting to feel new and beautiful.
Rather, I now feel covered and masked.
The real me in a disguise that no one can see through.
Wanting to be the real me,
Wanting to be free.
However, I know all the other kids at school,
Act the same way I do.
It’s normal, right?

In today’s society, social media surrounds me,
It encloses me and traps me,
Leaving me no air to breathe.
Forced to look at the fake models filling up my feed,
Causing my brain and emotions to spindle downward,
Until, I’m left feeling empty.
Feeling no good, not pretty.
Never good enough.

So maybe it is worth putting on the show.
Worth getting up earlier everyday to ensure,
That I can be the prettiest I can be, that I can look,
As close to the models as I can be.
That’s what all the girls do.
Despite not feeling like our real selves,
Despite the fact that we feel trapped in our own skin,
We are willing to do what we need to in order to conform,
Conform to the standards of society.
I mean, it’s normal, right?
