From Copperheads to Poetry
Slash and gash here I come
Ripped out into this world
My mom holding me
Grandma in the delivering room, not my dad
I am 4, fascinated by animals
Here comes a copperhead
Slithering to claim me as its victim
Here comes grandpa with a shovel
Cuts off its head
If he wouldn’t of done that I’d sure be dead
I am 7, I move to Missouri
I’m at a new school, a kid sits by me
I’m sitting nervous and rocking an afro
Wondering if this kid will be friend or foe
I am 10, my mom divorces Justin, my old step dad
Good, I’m glad
She asks if I’m ok
I respond with “I don’t really care”
I am 11, I ask about my real dad
My mom said he left when she was pregnant
I lived a good portion of my life with mom
That’s ok because she’s the bomb
I am 13, my mom meets a guy named Jeremy
He’s a cool guy
We like the same things, good first impression
I am 14, my mom marries Jeremy
Hooray
I am 15, I now have a little sister
Her name is Symone, the coolest person I’ve ever met
Is she also funny and badass? You bet
Now I am 17, performing my first spoken word poem
I am reading my poem and I see all
My peers’ faces and I’m going to continue
Now I’m off to the races
