Scars
Almond, Beady, twenty-twenty vision, eyes
Sunken and deep-set
As if they’ve seen the harsh reality of the world
Experienced the treachery of life
Rosy Lips so delicately curved
Fabricating a heavenly smile- only to realize it’s fake
Shoulders dropped and weary, hunched figure
As if carrying the weight of the world
I remember them bursting into my room exploding with excitement to tell me the good news
“Look I did it!” they said eyes radiating with fear, a sliver of hope
Bottle empty, pills gone, swallowed whole
I remember a gust of wind hit me, the grim reality, I love you so much
Why did you have to go?
No one knew the struggles you faced
Masked behind a beautiful face
Every day like an ongoing battle
Invisible scars hidden behind a beautiful smile
Bottle Empty, pills gone, swallowed whole
I loved you then and I love you now
You will always and forever be in my heart

I was inspired to write this poem to fight against the stigma of mental illnesses. I hope it encourages people to take an extra step and help a friend who is struggling, even a smile or a hug can go a long way.
