What You Don't See
You see a girl with glossy curves
But underneath the surface
Carefully refined hip bones poke through
You see broad shoulders
And muscular arms
But undressed I am the deep collarbones
That line my fragile aching body
I am the thin ribs you long for
You see a wannabe superstar
Starving for perfection, attention
But I want neither
I am no more than the plate of food before me
The calorie counts I let control me
You see an athlete
But when the curtain rises
You get a glimpse into me
My body, my soul
You finally see the tears that were once being held back
You see the food hidden in little bags
You see the excessive exercise
that breaks this body in half
You see an anorexic, a bulimic
A starving girl yearning for a flat stomach
A thigh gap
That will wash these endless tears away
In another time;
Another life.
