Patterns
  I can see my shadow
  on the wall beside me
as the candle on my nightstand
  flickers and fades.
And as I sit I fill the empty space
  with solid colors and houndstooth.
  Anything is better than nothing.
Maybe I am just noticing patterns.
  Chevron and gingham-
for it has been two years
since the night that we kissed
  barley, water, hops and yeast-
I could not be what you needed
and for that I am still sorry.
  Argile and herringbone-
I cannot tell if it is that you give me butterflies,
or if you make me so sick that I cannot tell the difference.
  Paisley and damask,
  linoleum tile and formaldehyde,
I returned home a few nights before you called.
  I missed you, I thought.
Maybe I am just noticing patterns,
But anything is better than nothing.
