human beings

human beings make up a world
of fragile and innocent souls
of glass hearts in crystal cages
and breaths in paper thin lungs
with thrumming bursts of emotion
spiking their way through their veins
a single spark can reduce them
to nothing but shadows and ash
and yet they continue being
burning bright before darkness descends
tiny beautiful heartbeats
flickering until the end
