Almost Perfect Season
We were riding high,
The team had become undefeated with the blink of an eye,
It seemed
We were the talk around the surrounding counties
The Morgan County Bulldogs,
They can’t be beat
Shutting out opponents
Our league: we owned it
The day was here,
Sunny and hot
The arrival of our next victim raised the bar
For the coaches and fans
The cheerleaders yelled “MC fired up”
As we stormed out of the locker room
The crowd roared as the War Eagles sent the ball into the air
The cheerleaders pumping the crowd up
Scoring is nothing new for us
But the crowd erupts with joy as we put the ball in the endzone
Just like that
Trying to get another shutout
Halftime approaches
Pep talks are regular
But this one is different
“We are beating ourselves”
They say
The third quarter runs into the fourth
All tied up
The running back takes a shot
Fumble in the backfield
We have to hold them
Fifteen seconds left
The ball sails high into the air
Into the hands of their fullback
Our ball
The buzzer sounds
Our perfect record laying in pieces on the field and in our hearts
A disappointed MOCO crowd struggles to get out of their seats
Tears in our eyes
We’re done
One last huddle on the “M”
Red eyes all around
Not a word to be said
Coaches are proud…
Could’ve been prouder
“Family on three one last time”
Cheer squad and all
A locker room prayer soothes us
In shock, a goodbye to brothers and coaches,
Our family,
Holds us over till the next meeting
Condolences at home
Don’t help me
My homework is finished
Sleep doesn’t come easy
Crushed dreams are not conducive for good sleep
Until next year
Football season will be missed
