"You Are My Sunshine"
“You are my sunshine,
My only sunshine”
Your words cascade into our intertwined hands,
And crawl up my spine to the back of my neck
Which you always said smelt of red roses and sweet honey.
How much I love you.
As I lay sleeping,
I dreamt I held you in my arms.
Lavender against sandpaper,
Cotton against stone.
When I awoke, my dear,
I was mistaken.
I cuddle next to an empty space of love and lust,
My palms sweaty,
And eyes blurry,
But clear enough to see,
That you had left my bedside.
You make me happy,
When skies are grey,
But now that it’s pouring,
You’ve walked away.
I’ll always love you,
And make you happy,
Though I know every night I will awake empty,
With a note on my nightstand,
Signed “Sorry,
-M”
Because you were too afraid to love.
You’ll never know dear,
How much I love you.
And you’ll never know,
That I gave up everything to be with you;
And you’ll never know,
That ever since you swam into the river,
Saving me from drowning in my own fault and flaws,
Things are more than I could ever deserve.
Please don’t take my sunshine away.

This a part of a collection of poetry I am currently writing, based off childhood lullabies, stories and nursery rhymes, etc. This one in particular is about a failed relationship of mine.
