Squirrel
even when i don’t think of you, i think of you
even when you’re not here, you’re here
you’re all around me
i remember everything.
sometimes all at once
but the worst is when it happens slowly
they come back to me
a thousand puzzle pieces slowly forming a picture
but i make sure to scramble them
what would it be like if i finished?
what would it look like?
what was it again that we called ‘us’?
i guess i feel alone
because you left
because of how you left me
i screamed, i cried
like i never had before
it felt like the squirrel in the street
remember?
it was so close to crossing under the car
so close to freedom
but it hesitated
and the wheel caught its head
remember?
i pulled over after it all happened
i cried
i mourned it’s death.
so maybe that is what it would like if i finished
a headless squirrel.
