Contents of the can littered the floor,
and strewn to the side, the torn plastic bag,
barely recognizable past the remnants
of yesterday’s breakfast.

Layers of scraps revealed themselves:
silvery Belvita bar wrappers and
crumpled up cereal bar boxes.
A discarded handful of seedless red grapes
and a blue paper plate.

Further down, the leftover dinner
from the night before, licked clean
off the small paper dishes
which held Mom’s green beans.

scattered, untouched, laid an old notebook,
some torn papers and a few classroom doodles.
A few old pens and a pile of math homework,
scribbled on by an impatient hand.

The culprit of the crime leapt out from behind
the mess surrounding the bin.
His little tail wagged for he was full of pride
at his little act of revenge.

He nuzzled at the mess to reveal
an empty kibble bag
before letting out a victorious bark,
he knew he had their attention now.
