The creature murmurs
Softly, eerily
Your heart feels comfortable
Your mind wanders to the corner of the room
Where the creature is hunched
It waits
‘Til your eyes are closed
Then is creeps, wearing the night as a cloak
It touches your face, but you do not feel it
You open your eyes:
The dreary clouds of sleep blind you,
But you see it clearly.
You blink, but the creature remains.
You can feel it drip into you ear,
Into your mind,
And the ringing in your ears is only broken
By your thumping heart.
You take a breath:
And you know the creature heard you,
crouched next to your bed,
It stopped, It’s fingers froze on your cheek.
It heard you alright.
Your icy veins pulse loudly,
And you scream internally for them to be quiet
So the creature might leave.
Your eyes grow dry,
Tears well and sting them,
But you dare not blink,
For the beast will follow you into the darkness
Of your mind.
Your fingers fumble for the light switch.
You can almost hear the monster's breath,
And you can feel it’s eyes,
Staring.
You whisper a prayer, and turn on the lamp.
The light floods the room,
The creature shatters like glass,
And crawls under your bed.
Your ears are still ringing,
But relief washes over you,
Because it was just a shadow.
