It started when I passed the shore,

After years gone by I held it more.

The sun slid down and doused the sky,

In the same colors of when I said goodbye.

Then came the terrors that stole the nights,

I saw your face

And countless more in fright.

Then one night as I took to bed,

I stumbled upon a dream instead.

In the shallow gutters

You smiled up at me,

As if you had just fallen for my eyes to see.

Honey colored windows laced with green,

There was so much that we couldn’t have foreseen.

How you boarded that train with a vow on your lips,

You meant to return

But your fortune was eclipsed.

Years have passed since I last thought of you,

And now I cannot breathe

without remembering when one was two.

The author's comments:

Remembrance, is a poem I wrote right after watching Testament of Youth. Watching that movie brought about a nostalgic and mournful feeling. It evoked such visceral feelings, it was almost as if I had grown up in a war torn nation. At the same time, I wrote this poem to be inclusive, and not just for those whose loved ones have perished in war.
