Hollow wings

Lithe little lies lying upon littered light lines

Making us think we can fly

High, high in the sky

Too close to the sun

Melting, breaking

Falling, crashing

If only we had listened

Ignored, thought we knew better

"No point in going on," he said

And with those wings, he took flight

If only we had watched

We would have looked through those

Dark, dark eyes - through the wet panels

And saw those wings, deep within

The hollow, crying wings

We would have known, then

Understood why

He took flight on those wings

The wings that couldn't fly

"Why?" we cried,

When we understood, then

When we looked back

Into our reflections

Our hollow, crying wings.

The author's comments:

A good friend of many years struggled with suicidal thoughts for a very, very long time. I spoke to him every day, always tried to support and help him through his dark times, because I understood what it felt like to feel worthless, to feel like you'll never be able to accomplish anything. Everyone is priceless. Everyone has their own set of skills, their own talents. Suicide is never the best answer. You have to count your blessings, and understand that everyone has their own pain, their own struggle. Everyone has their own burden to bear, and some just need help carrying theirs at times. Life isn't easy, but it's ours. You just have to keep looking up. You have to keep trying.
