Who I Am
I once saw a boy
From across the room
His skin was pale
His eyes were blue
He sat in the silence
So that he could hear
The patters of rain
Perfectly clear
He dared not move
For fear that he might
Interrupt the rain
Or disturb the night
He had a sweet face
His eyes were kind
His manner showed passion
And he had a clear mind
It was then that I thought
Of how we hide in our heads
And what it is that we think
When nothing gets said
And our thoughts never seem
To wander too far
When we sit in the silence
And just be who we are
But I saw him again
When a few days had gone by
And that sweet boy was gone
Replaced with a lie
And this lie walked around
With his chest puffed out
When his friends would yell
He began to shout
He loomed like a shadow
They sit and he sat
Not his own self
But a made up copy-cat
This was not the boy
I saw just nights ago
Who listened to the rain
And kept his voice low
He laughed when they laughed
And I wanted to know why
But then there was a wail
A girl had started to cry
The others called her ugly
She could do nothing at all
And you could see it on her face
As it started to fall
This isn’t the first time
She’s believed their lies
You can tell by the pain
That hides in her eyes
Her irises hold the glass
That she thought she shattered
From looking in the mirror-
Her pride in tatters
Of course this wasn’t true
She had beauty deep within
The problem was that she wore
Their words upon her skin
Somewhere we’ve lost ourselves
Within the cracks of the sky
And climbed into another person
To create ourselves a lie
I know of your scars
For I bear the same
I know of your anguish
Because I have felt your pain
Let me be your mirror
And put your pride to the test
I will tear down your doors
And your walls will come next
Crack open my skin
And look into me-
I am but a reflection
Of the broken soul you must be
But there are greater things
That we do not understand-
The real words we fear?
“I love who I am.”

My english assignment required us to write a research paper and I studied how our personalities can change by who we are around and how we are treated. I thought about how common it is for everyone, especially teens. We try so hard to fit in and be what we think we are supposed to, and when we can't, we let others tell us how wrong we are. We care too much about what others think, and I think its time we start focusing on ourselves and how great we are. This is something that I too need to work on, but its so important. We have to love ourselves before we let anyone else love us.
