Drowning
Falling into a dark sea,
the waters surround your numb body
and your brain explodes into a lush rainforest
of unfamiliar sounds and bright colors.
The walls breathe like a newborn;
in and out,
in and out,
and glowing static from a screaming screen
overwhelms your stimulated brain,
and you struggle to find air.
Eyes shut, but there is no peace behind closed lids.
Friends become strange, distant creatures,
but the sunken sofa welcomes the abused body
that your mind tries to control.
Six in the morning
and the battle has ceased.
Eyes shut once more, but this time, the quiet room
and soothing rain outside your dark window
send you into blissful sleep.
