A smell was all it took, wafting down the crowded street

Accompanied by a soothing whisper, heard by me alone

Images flood through my mind's eyes

Destroying the dam I built to hold them back.

"I love you, to the moon and back."

If only I knew then what I know now.

"I only have eyes for you, my dear."

If only that were the truth.

No. Not here, not now.

This should not be happening!

I am done, finished with these memories

They are barricaded away, locked behind my façade of normality.

"You look beautiful tonight, in that dress I bought for you."

Stop with the lies, the endless torment!

"You are the only one for me."

Stop this, leave me be!

Why do you still occupy my thoughts?

I pushed you away, closed my heart to your continued advances

And yet, you wormed your way back in

Ever eager to exploit my wishes for your own gain.

"Tell me it was a mistake. Tell me you were wrong."

But it wasn't a mistake, was it?

"Don't walk out on me, not with so many things unsaid."

But you've moved on, haven't you?

I believed every word, every gaze, every tender kiss--

These soft-spoken lies caressed my broken heart

Patching it together, piece by jagged piece,

Just for you to rip it apart, shattering my hopes and dreams.

"You will never find someone like me."

For my sake, I hope that proves true.

I hope this piece will allow those who haven't experienced heartbreak to understand how truly heartbreaking it can be.
