Poster Child
A boy with blue eyes and honeyed hair
A little too long and tousled
Stands on his own with a trashbag in hand
His shirt is a little too big
The collar hanging loosely off of one shoulder
He has the look of another world in his eyes
But it’s a dark, dangerous place he sees
He longs to see light
He is moving once again
Another household that couldn’t keep their promise
An endless search to find his forever home
That poster child is there in all of them
But he only shows himself in bits and pieces
That grateful, hopeful spirit is obscured
By the dark veils of their past

Over a year ago, my family started fostering these two children. We learned quickly that everything we thought was wrong, and we had to remind ourselves constantly that they were still children.
