My Deepest Regret

October 28, 2016
By Anonymous

Falling slowly, my body breaks the surface of the water

Silent ripples spread across the lake

Air bubbles stream from my mouth

The water is murky, but I see clear

As I sink deeper the skeletons of long fallen leaves come to life

Each one projects a memory I thought I'd forgotten

The good times, the little things

How I long for them now

My body gently hits the bottom of the lake

The rocks in my pockets hold me down in the the soft mud

Memories surround me

And I stare up through the surface

The old stone bridge was the last thing my feet touched

It's too late to take it back

My tears become part of the lake

As does my body
