"Pretty Little Eating Disorders"
“Pretty Little Eating Disorders”
Oh, the media
What do you show us?
BULLS***.
Doesn’t it seem a bit ODD
Anorexia is everywhere, yet periods are no where to be seen
One equaling death, decay, ruin
The other a normal process of life
Yet the former is glamorous, okay, normal, and Popular
While the latter is too vile to be discussed, yet alone seen.
The books that portray eating disorders as a quick fix,
an essential instruction in the manual of popularity,
but seem to forget the hell they bring,
Instead fixating on the TOTALLY PRETTY, PERFECT, “HEALTHY” girl who only eats salad.
No one talks about how Eating Disorders kill until you are already dying.
The girls in the shows praise these murderers for their guidance in their rise to popularity.
Only now do I see in clarity, how unbelievably false these images are.
My eating disorder did not get me friends, confidence or perfection
It got me in the hospital
See this distortion in the media is cruel
Because if it makes the girl on my TV happy and beautiful,
why didn’t it do the same for me?

I have struggled and am in recovery from anorexia nervosa. The portrayal of eating disorders in the media disgusts me and I want to speak out against it. I hope this poem is able to shed some light.
