The Awakening
The moon shone on chillest land,
black as death’s solemn gate.
Dark mountains loomed,
casting ominous shadows. .
Pavement, winding like rivers
up and around sleeping forest.
The hush of the night,
finally a break,
from the endless stream of daytime strangers.
Silence covered the colorless trees and grass,
sore from being tread upon
during the chaotic daytime hours.
Heavy eyed trees could finally rest
after watching every person walk beneath.
A small child lay
forgotten
by the throngs of people long gone,
trembling like the fingers of a violinist.
Shredded rags hanging off a slight frame
covered with musty scent.
Cold permeated slender fingers
plunging them into icy numbness.
Succumbing to the frigid spell,
only to be pulled out of the lull of death
when bolting to escape
faint yet feral rattling
of a tree awakening from deep slumber.
Rays of sun peek across jagged horizon.
Land clasping onto hope
of an utterly warm world.
The solitary child listens to the awakening -
