Life's Clock
Can you hear the ticking my love?
The clock of the people around us?
When they live, who they love,
The clock has been with you since birth,
Your first smile, documented in the numbers,
My love it knows you,
It knows your first steps,
Your first tooth,
All the times you ran from home,
But you always returned, my love,
You returned to the ticking of the daily routine,
When did you make room for me?
Our first smile, shared under the willow tree,
Or our first kiss, by the stream side,
The clock knows us, and it ticks to the minute we die.
My love, it is only a clock!
Though time may escape us, we can never escape it,
Time is etched through my old bones,
I feel it in my fingers,
In my back and toes,
The clock will stop ticking for me, but we cannot say when,
It may be tomorrow, maybe today,
I still remember all the times I heard the clock tick,
As I watched you walk down the aisle,
As I watched our children sleep in their cribs,
As they grew and left us all alone.
But my love do not distress!
As I said so many years ago,
Till death do we part.
My love I can see him.
I can see death offer me a hand, to pull me from my misery.
It is tempting, oh my love!
Though I can hear the clock I do not despair,
I won't be gone long, love!
I'll be back,
You'll see me in the eyes of our children,
Perhaps in the hands of the clock,
Do not forget me, love!
Though it is close, I see darkness pressing on the edge of my vision,
Remember what I said so many years ago!
May only death do we part.
