The ember scalds me like
a rush of water that
Threatened to drown
But instead preserved

You understand that the ember
Once was not an ember
It was a fire that
Burned and when it couldn't Burn
It Suffocated and when I couldn't breathe
It slowly slid its smiling fingers away

Just like you, when you left me
Bleeding on top of the shattered glass
that begged
To be made into a mosaic

Sometimes grapes become raisins.
Time slides away as each second ticks
To the beat of unshed tears.

But sometimes time
Stops.
You look at yourself
In the
Mirror and the fire sparks inside you instead
Of through you.

You smell the breeze of the sea and
Even though you are petrified you
Lay on your back and float.
You close your eyes and the water becomes
The blanket that your mother once covered you in
While you sat by the fire and the whites
Of your eyes traced patterns in the flames without the
Fear of being ignited.

Sometimes grapes become wine.
Like a Phoenix who rose from the ashes of
The hours that singed a soul.
Time is no longer linear but comprised of
Moments. The sweetness of sugar separates
From the bitterness of coffee.
The ember that burned inside the heart
Acts only as a reminder of the whisper on the wind
That was almost Lost.
