So Much More Than Blue

Opalescent like the sun's reflection hitting the ocean on a warm summer day,

A riot of hues coming together as if protesting for a cause.

Sky blue when you are happy, but a violent cobalt when you are not

And when you are sad, a faded ice-blue, like the remnants of a glacier now melted.

Streaky and marbled, they resemble the tile lain on an abandoned palace floor,

Washed out, yet picturesque.

When I look at them I think of serenity- saturated and kaleidoscopic.

Never sooty, but always speckled with enthusiasm when I say your name.

Pastel when need be, but motley and unrecognizable when I mutter the words "I no longer need you".

Cornflower blue on your brave days,

But they soon collapse into hues of slate,

Like my sheets, over washed and under used.

Your eyes are a mix of all that is good in the world

So it pains me when you describe them as "just blue".

In creative writing class, we were given the assignment of discribing a color. I chose to write about a past-love's eyes.
