Shannel
Shannel,
A name fit for little girl
Dressed in frilly pink dresses.
This little Shannel
Was true to her girly name.
Her mom dressed her in little frilly things
When she was little.
Shannel’s personality did not
Match her name.
All the little girls were sitting in the grass
Having tea with their dollies.
Shannel wasn’t there.
She was down with the boys
Digging in the dirt.
The little girls sat coloring inside
And Shannel was out in the yard
With the boys
Carefully helping the little snake
Caught in her fence.
As she grew,
She could pick out her own clothes.
She ditched all the
Frilly pink dresses,
And wore her favorite camoflash
Cargo pants,
The ones she had to beg for at the store,
As often as she could.
Shannel wore them proudly.
She got funny looks
When she played in the park.
The girls at school teases her:
“Why do you look like a boy?”
And
“Get some girl clothes.”
She kept on a brave face
But it was slowly
Eating
Away
At her.
She had to toughen up
She learned to
Not let it in.
Shannel, a feminine, girly name
Did not fit this tough little girl,
Who didn’t give up
And didn’t give in.

This is a poem about what my name means to me and a bit about my life when I was younger.
