Doom Looms Overhead

The ocean’s foamy edges burst against the rocky shore,
spraying salt water
and casting seashells across the cold earth.
Those who are free
attempt to flee.
The others wait,
gazing through glazed eyes at the crashing currents.
A lone raspy voice murmurs
a last morning prayer
before the sky
breaks.
