There are some things I wish I knew before I went to High School,
Like how many times I’d be told “this looks good on college applications” before I hit 10th grade.
I spend every week fighting for the weekend and then, after two short days,
Come Monday,
I hit replay.
They tell me that I need to get ready for the real world,
Are the first 18 years just a trial?
What happens if I want to unsubscribe?
I’m supposed to figure out what I want to do with the rest of my life,
But I don’t even know who I am yet.
And then I say “I want to be a writer,”
And they tell me “maybe you should choose something more realistic.”
So I can be anything I want, but only if it concurs with your expectations?
I tour colleges and they tell me “always think about the future.”
What future?
I’ve barely had enough time to collect a past.
School has turned out to be a never ending battle I never agreed to fight,
And these are futures I never wanted.
I wish someone had told me that keeping the fire in your soul is harder than keeping your grades up.
They’re supposed to fuel my inferno, not extinguish it,
But I guess it must not look good on college applications.
And even as I sit here typing,
I know nothing I say could possibly matter,
Unless it’s double spaced,
In Times New Roman,

I wrote this poem to free the stress and frustration that often accompanies being a high schooler. In some ways, I think that writing something highlighting how hard life can be allows people to appreciate the good parts more.
