They Told Me
When I was young,
They told me to reach for the stars,
but when I began idolizing Neil Armstrong,
they told me to keep my arms at my side.
They told me “money can’t buy happiness”,
but when I spent my summer having fun
they told me to grow up and get a job
When I was young,
They told me that as long as I love myself that’s all that matters,
but now I find myself seeking their acceptance.
They told me that I when grew up, I would know the answers,
I still don't, but now my list of questions has changed.
Why do dogs bark? How deep is the ocean?
Why does the the sun shine so bright?
Have now become
Why am I here? Why am I doing with my life?
How do I make the pain stop?
They told me when I grew up that I would know.
They told me when I grew up that I would be ok.
They told me when I grew up that I would be happy.
