Graduation
It took a long time for us to do so,
More years than we originally thought.
Our parents tried to help where they could,
But we just brushed them off.
It took a lot of songs on the radio,
And a lot of midnight drives.
It took having fun at parties,
And trying to feel alive.
It took a lot of heartbreak,
And a million more tears.
To get us to the point,
Where we could face all our fears.
We thought we had it figured out,
We thought we were doing it right.
We assumed we already had it all,
That our future was in sight.
I guess it takes experience,
To be able to admit you’re wrong.
It takes some time to wisen up,
To find your life’s song.
It took a lot of sleepless nights,
A few shoulders to cry on.
And it took a while to accept,
That our childhood is gone.
The changes happened gradually,
It was a long and slow process.
But the casual speed of the journey,
Doesn’t make its meaning less.
We were born and raised in this little town,
Where there’s never much to do.
It helped us get creative,
It helped us get a clue.
We finally began to realize,
There’s a great big world out there.
There’s more to life than Mukwonago,
And it’s time we start to care.
It’s time we take that deep breath,
That first step on the ground.
To clear the brush out of the way,
And walk the path we’ve found.
We’ve had years and years to prepare,
And of course it will still be hard.
It takes a magnitude of strength,
To leave your own backyard.
The clock on the wall is ticking,
As it has been all along.
It’s just a matter of time now,
Before we’ve all got up and gone.
It took a lot of rainstorms,
Some lightning from above.
It took some damp and misty days,
For us to appreciate the love.
It took a lot of bonfires,
Some laughs and dumb mistakes.
It took a lot of figuring out,
To mend and stitch the breaks.
It took a long time for us to do so,
More years than we originally thought.
Our parents tried to help where they could,
But we all eventually -
Grew up.
