People Like Me
People like me
push ourselves hard
but sometimes
we need a break.
Tired of being needed,
tired of being looked to,
tired of acting like
we have our life together.
Because... people like me:
Don't.
My very existence screams "chaos".
How does it not look like I'm on the verge of collapse?
My smile never reaches my eyes.
How do I look like I believe in tomorrow?
People like me:
Are full time actors,
but sometimes our costumes rip.
People like me:
Don't want to burden others
yet often make others' burdens their own.
People like me:
Don't say we're sad,
because we don't believe
we're worthy of love.
People like me:
Sacrifice our happiness for yours.
(Please don't feel bad about that, it's a force of habit.)

A week ago, I sat down next to a complete stranger during lunch. When given a questioning look, I sighed, "I need to sit somewhere people won't need me for anything." As an empathetic soul, and someone with little experience involving friendships, I find it near impossible to not listen to my friends. I rarely expect them to listen to me. Previously having a very small circle of friends, I was able to play 'counselor' easily. Moving into the high school setting, I've taken on so much, I'm forgetting to adress my own problems. This poem gives insight to what it's like being the too approachable friend.
