Little girl
I Used to be a little girl
With pigtail braids and a big smile
And dreams too big to comprehend
  Joy, wonder, and innocence
These things I used to be
I used to be a growing girl
With plastic jewelry and a rainbow room
Seeing the world through rose colored goggles
  Naiive, honest, and curious
These things I used to be
I used to be a young lady
I dressed in style and combed my hair
I made friends easily and loved to learn
  Bright, charismatic, responsible
These things I used to be
I used to be a teenager
With baggy clothes to hide my flaws
  avoiding other girls and boys
  Lonely, fearful, insecure
These are things I used to be
  Now I’m an adult
And I don’t care much how i look
I think too deep and see things differently
  Cynical, damaged, tired
  How did this happen?
I once was just a little girl
With eyes that only saw the good
  And no burdens to carry
  Happy.
I used to be a little girl.
