The Struggle of a Black Man
A black man walks home from the grocery store.
He knows the struggle of his identity, he can’t escape the way he is seen.
Dangerous, thug, malicious.
He walks down the street and women hide their purses and pull their children close. “Watch out for the black man, he is a threat.”
He must consider that more will endanger his son than a scrape on the knee. He must tell his son, his son who has been taught to idolize police officers, that he cannot have a misunderstanding with one. He may be killed for it. “Don’t put your hands in your pockets, son. They could think you have a gun.”
And that night the boy must go to sleep thinking that the people who are supposed to protect him are the danger. Because of his identity he will always be perceived as a threat. Just an innocent boy.
