We tend to care about the little things,
But they are not the right things
It’s about what means inside of us
That moves us to the potential that we have
Just thinking not knowing what really goes on in the outside world
We become numb to those were really suffering
It’s a disease that has risen.

The “A” word.
Apathy.
Apathy has spread like a virus through our society
Like a plague filled by the materialism of our world.
We have all felt that incredible desire to stop feeling and caring about anything
We don’t care about those around us
Losing touch with human emotion
We get up, we go to work, we eat dinner, we go to bed
We are fed, we are sheltered, we breathe
But is that really living?
It’s so easy to get acquired with comfort
But what about the 40 MILLION CHILDREN WHO DIE FROM HUNGER?
WHAT ABOUT THE 61 MILLION CHILDREN WHO DO NOT GET AN EDUCATION
WHAT ABOUT THE MILLIONS OF HOMELESS PEOPLE LIVING ON THE STREETS.
We sit at a desk
Taking tests
Feeling sorry for ourselves
WHEN THERE ARE OTHERS WHO DON’T GET AN EDUCATION

The “A” Word.
It runs our society.
We hear things that mean nothing to us
It runs in our blood soaring through all our minds.
To realize that people care more about the death of Cecil the Lion
While Thousands of Syrian refugees are attempting to escape their war-torn country

Apathy.
Gun shots.
Boom. Boom. BOOM.
14 dead. 20 dead. 100 dead.
But yet we don’t care because we tell ourselves
It’s not ME
It won’t happen to ME
It will never happen to me.
This ignorance runs through our system.
That word. That “A” Word.

Apathy.
Scrolling down news articles
watching videos.
We see what is happening
But, WE DO NOT FEEL WHAT THEY FEEL ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE WORLD because it's not my problem. It's not MY PROBLEM. IT'S NOT MY PROBLEM.
but it is.
Because we are all the same people.

Now, there is hope for our generation
Through passion, dreams, and determination
We can change what we feel
To turn that “A” word
Into affinity. Empathy. Sympathy
And once we feel
We can become greater people.

The author's comments:

Our society is filled with apathetic people and we tend to fall under the realms of ignorance and greed. We need to change apathy into empathy and have some compassion for one another. Our society needs to care more about the world around us politically, economically, in the environment, and in society.
