Beep Beep Beep
Sitting at the side of his bed in a nothing but white hospital room with that horrible smell everyone hates
I just listen because what else can I do when the one I love is on the brink of death
As I stare at his helpless body that’s covered in bruises bluer than the sea and cuts deeper than the ocean
Tears start falling down my face because I know the beeping of the machine is the last thing keeping him alive and when it stops so does he
So I just listen

Beep Beep Beep
Another day goes by with me strapped to the bed unable to move
It breaks my heart when each one of her tears drip onto my hand
It hurts even more knowing she’s crying because of me
The echo of the machine rings in my ears and I pray that I’ll be able to see my wife soon
But it’s up to God now if I’m going to survive
So I just wait

Beep Beep Beep
Watching him lay there for another day is horrible
The doctor’s say that he’s getting worse
But I can’t believe that because he’s my husband and he can’t die on me
He has to survive because if he doesn’t neither will I
But there’s not much I can do
So I just wait

Beep Beep Beep
My fight is almost over
I know it, the doctors know it, even God knows it
The one thing keeping me somewhat alive is her, my one true love
I know she won’t be the same when I’m gone but there’s not much left in me to fight
There’s a bright white light appearing in front of me and I know it’s time
Just as I’m about to say goodbye she says one powerful word
“Fight!”
As she said that something changed inside of me and the light began to dwindle
Almost as if her voice allowed me to move and our love is bringing me back bit by bit
She continues to repeat that single word and this time I don’t give up instead I fight
I understand her words are keeping me alive
So I just listen

The author's comments:

In this poem I changed perspectives between a wife and husband in each stanza. I wanted to get across the feeling each person had while the husband is in the hospital and how love is able to overcome all obstacles.
