Mechanical Lullaby
She sits upon his cold metal knee,
To hear a bed-time story
She's beautiful just like her mother,
The one who had chosen another
He turns the key and the music begins to play
She isn't sleepy so she asks him to stay
He sits by the child's bed and recalls her pretty smile
He hadn't seen it a while
He let out a sigh,
While listening as the tiny dancer spun to the mechanical lullaby
Robots made of metal and powered by steam,
Cannot sleep,But oh how they dream
Oil leaked from his eyes
This is the closest he'll ever get to a cry
The one thing he dreams of most is to be real
More than anything in the world he just wants to feel
If he'd had a heart in his chest,
He knew she would've liked him best
In his mind he saw her the way they were before
Her golden hair twirled as they glided across the dance floor
Late night talks and stolen kisses had overloaded his circuitry
Together forever he'd always thought they'd be...
He could almost hear the carriage pulling up,The horse it did neigh
Out stepped a man dressed in black, The one who would take her away
The bot he did love her but she told him goodbye,
His love wasn't real just an automated set of responses from his AI
His love for her was true,
But all she saw was a machine,She never really knew
Her dress was long and white, a veil covered her face
She'd recieved a kiss from the man who'd taken his place
He'd never get her back,it was too late
That kiss had sealed his fate
Soon after a little girl was born
And the years rolled by as the bot became rusted and worn
Seven years had passed,
And his melancholy state seemed to last
He looked over at the child who was now fast asleep in her bed
He gave her a goobye kiss on the forehead
She just looked too much like her,
And he couldn't bare to look anymore
He wished that he could wipe her existance from his hard drive
Life is not worth living when you're not really alive
So he sighed,
Unplugged his power core and shut down for good to the mechanical lullaby

This poem was mostly inspired by the song Turn Back the Clock by the band Steam Powered Giraffe. It was also influenced by their song Honeybee and some of their lore. The story behind the poem is that a family owned a robot. He fell in love with their daughter and she loved him too so they would sneak off together at night. But a suitor came calling for the daughter's hand and she chose him instead of the bot because she didn't believe the bot could ever really love her. The robot is still owned by this family and is now watching the girl's daughter. He stays with her because she can't sleep but looking at her reminds him too much of her mother...
