True America
May your freedoms exist in writing and enchant you with hope
May your liberties inspire a change in your soul
May your fantasy of a perfect reality be taught in school classrooms
May your children chant the words “America is truly free!”
May your dreams ponder a perfect country as it is written
May your reality shatter that beautiful picture hung in your heart
May your neighbors go hungry, starved of food and willpower
May your friend’s skin color dictate his future
May your acquaintances accuse each other of crime
May your peers look on, stay quiet, silent
May your soul be swallowed by guilt of the past
For things you have not done remain in the footsteps of those before you
May your mind fill with fear of what is to come
May your children and beyond clean up the mess
May your eyes open to what America truly is.

I wrote this for an English assignment and I found I liked it quite a bit. This is how I see the world today, but I generally am optimistic about my generation and the future. Enjoy!
