Snake Cheese
2009: She was a small blob.
Soft and squishy wrapped
In a cheetah print blanket.
Warming my heart like the sun.
2010: She was a tiny monkey.
Going bananas and flinging,
Her chocolate cake at dad.
“Ee-hee Lily,” she said.
2011: She was a baby ballerina.
Twirling in her tutu,
Leaping around everyone,
Who was just trying to enjoy their meal.
2012: She was a brave princess.
Sitting down in her curly red wig,
And yelling at Laila for
Trying to steal her presents.
2013: She was a scurrying mouse.
Taking all of the tokens
And everyone’s tickets,
And crying until she got treats.
2014: She was an ice queen.
Singing for everyone,
Ignoring the presents, but
Tossing the tissue paper around.
2015: She was a pop star.
Skating to her own single,
With her classic red lipstick,
And laughed every time she fell down.

I wrote this poem about my half-sister who has been the most important person in my life since the day she was born, and how I have gotten to see her grow up every year and share special memories with her that I hope she will carry on throughout her life as well.
