A Reflection

It’s been quite some time since I’ve last gone to visit him

I remember his everlasting radiant smile, bright as the sun

It’s joy and warmth forever etched into my memory

I remember the time when we ventured to the confined walls of the dull hospital

The scent of chemicals and disinfectant burning my senses

The one place I hate

The one place that dims the light

I remember the feeling of darkness coming upon him

Enveloping him in its dark, thick cloak

Extinguishing the fire that had existed

And he was gone

Standing now in front of this obfuscated sun

I recall all the things that I regret

Never teaching him the ways of the world

Never teaching him how to cook to appeal to his beloved

Never teaching him how to comfort

Never comforting him when in pain

Never showing him how much I cared

And I yearned for one more word

One more breath

One more look

One more hug

One more smile

One more

I stood as my own rain splattered, creating a flood that covered him

And stained the only color left vibrant in this place

A red rose on his grave

The author's comments:

I am a middle school student and love to write as a hobby. I wrote this poem under the inspiration of my cousin. As I read a romantic poem written by her, I suddenly got the inspiration to write this poem. I am hoping that the readers will be able to sense the feelings of the speaker, her joy and regrets. I'm just hoping that the readers will enjoy this piece and see this poem as beautiful.
