Vietnam
A boy was drafted to war in vietnam,
many of his friends had already gone,
before him, to fight the fight,
be brave, and protect a life.
he was initiated into the paratroopers
he thought it was great, he thought it was super.
He’d never gotten to fly before,
Even though his father had in the first world war.
Back to the boy, who got to fly,
his first time in battle he was dropped at night.
but the plane he was on, overshot
it was way too late when they told him to drop.
He launched himself, out into the cold
such a young boy, so incredibly bold.
His parachute opened at 1000 feet
there was so much gunfire, he could feel the heat.
machinegun fire exploded both sides.
the boy hit the ground, then needed to hide.
rivers of blood made all the bodies gleam,
so much death, for the american dream.
the hand radio crackled anxiously,
listed name after name of casualties.
The boy ran into the jungle to get away.
He wasn’t gonna lose his life today.
He ditched his pack, and pulled out a machete.
If any vietnamese came, he’d be ready.
The sounds of war faded into silence
as the boy urged on into the blackness
He thought of his pack now so far back,
and why we’d have future wars, such as in iraq.
His gear was in the mud,
his heart was in his throat,
in boot camp he’d been taught if he was gonna choke.
He was supposed to duck down, and recover his breath.
but if he stopped now though, it’d mean certain death.
He heard a sound, off to his left
he slowed down, just to double check.
that's when the soldiers came out of the floor.
vines on the ground, became trap doors.
The boy dropped quickly down on all fours.
but the vietnamese saw him
lowered their guns and shot.
the boy thought he was dead,
so he threw up a prayer,
bullets flew past grazing his hair.
His hands dropped their weapon
intense fear causing his face to redden.
Vietnamese stopped their firing and closed the gap,
then grabbed his arms and broke ‘em with a snap.
People are killed by terrorists every single day
But in america all we care about is people being gay
little kids are forced to hold guns, just to feed themselves
in america we’re hungry, even after loosening our belts.
Atrocities happen in america too,
just when we care, there isn't anything we can't do.
turning away, never helped the cause
speaking and wishing, are just as good as thoughts.
there are things to be done, laws to be made
this is land of the free. Step up, be brave.
The free world’s playing the news off like they don’t know
and so the body count worldwide, continues to grow.
as long as we don’t give these issues an ear
the world peace we all long for, just won’t come near.

In my creative writing class we were asked to write a short story. As it happens I had writers block, and thus decided to write what comes more naturally to me. This is the skeleton of my story. Hope you enjoy!
