Driving Down the Street
You drive down the road,
only to see another person walking.
You go on with your day,
not thinking anything of it.
Do you ever stop and wonder where they are going?
To a hopelessly happy home,
to another worrisome Wednesday at work,
or to a productive, persistent walk to the park.
What about those with children?
Does it ever phase you?
As you pass in your toasty-warm car,
while they walk the blizzard winter.
Does it ever phase you?
As you devour the delicious, refreshing snow cone,
while they sweat till exhaustion by the scorching sun.
Does it ever phase you?
These people must be made of steel,
strength and invulnerability.
Does it ever phase you?
What if they don’t have anywhere to go,
or a place to call home?
Too scared to ask for help,
embarrassed,
or determined to provide for themselves.
Often not willing to accept
Defeat.
When in reality,
they need you more than ever.
Pay close attention the next time
when driving down the street.
Be mindful of your surroundings.
Look around,
you’ll be surprised at what you see.
The mom you always spot,
pushing her kid in a stroller for their daily walk,
is really trying to find her next meal.
