If you live in the past, you become depressed. If you live in the future, you become anxious. If you live in the present, you experience everyday one at a time so make the best of it.

Boys and Girls

both black and white

we must come together

to end this fight.

We’ll join hands

and stand as one

this is what MLK

would want to have done.

Civil Rights Movement; 1964

times like this

we must remember more

little boys and girls

segregated by color

some beaten to death

some left to suffer.

He had a dream

of times like this

to end the pain

he could only wish.

Such a tragic death

to see a hero go

but the dream is still here

and you don’t even know.

He fought his fight

but now it’s our turn.

Forget what you know

get ready to learn.

Pull up your pants

stand tall and proud

put down the guns

we’ll make a new sound.

We’re all different

but that’s okay

’cause after every night

comes a new day.

The author's comments:

I was inspired by Dr. King's dream of African-Americans having freedom one day. Well, we have freedom but it really doesn't feel that equal. It's not just about us sharing the same school, it's about people like you and me coming together to show there's nothing wrong with being different. Be Unique! There's only one you, so be the best you that you can be.
