Where I’m From
Where I’m from
Twas the night before October 23,
When the father Almighty
Made the second of two
Which he named Jackson
Another of a Pugh
In the backwoods of Flint
There were no big jobs
Or big industries
Just simply large
In community
At the age of 3
When I was unware
A divorce happened
Which I though
Would cause some despair
What I didn’t realise is,
Despite the stricter
Rules and the stricter
Standards from my
Stricter new Dad
My life would change
And better, I did fare
With this new dad,
Where I begin my origins
I learned how to eat
And more importantly
I learned how to live…
In the green backyard,
Abundant with trees
I would hit baseballs
In jubilee
Wathching them fly
Like a bird in the sky
I would wait for my dad
To hit balls from this guy
When the snow hit
It conquered the ground
I would invite my friend over
Then the fun would abound
We would lance the pigskin
All over the blanket
Of snow and would hope
All day we would make it
Aye not only friends
And my dad shaped my childhood
But also my Grammy
Who lived not far from the ‘hood
There, I would munch
On crackers and cookies
And then wait for her special
Chicken and Rice
I would climb in my bunk-bed
After reading a story
Waiting for church the next day
To celebrate God’s glory
However, the day before
If the snow was melted
And the leaves were brown
The Wolverines and Lions
Would rule the town
In the sea of maize and blue
Every Saturday
We and watch the winningest program
Touch the banner and play
And when Sunday struck
We could only pray
That our beloved Lions
Could rule the day
Which was very uncommon
By the way
But win or lose
The teams that we watched
As well as our friends and family
Brought us together
As a community
When I visit the mitten
To see my grandmother
I remember the great things
From my childhood
As I hear the bells ring
