Where I’m From
I’m from a predestined fortune
I’m from a privileged society, oblivious to the infinite blessings handed to them on a silver platter
Engraved with gold
Their monograms etched into the surface
I’m from ombre-haired clones, doubling over to reality shows, comforted by the lack of substance
I’m from a lack of substance
From Kim Kardashian worshippers
Their shrines built from oblivion
From blind eyes looking into a kaleidoscope of diamonds
They only manage see the coal
I’m from a disconnect between reality and the hypothetical
I’m in the hypothetical, as I a wrap my blanket of ignorance around my shoulders
It keeps me warm
I’m from faith placed in pinkies, fingers crossed behind backs
I’m from institutionalized racism, an intangible barrier between where I am and where I know I’m meant to be
From accusing fingers of bigotry
From shouting voices of xenophobia
I’m from a time where fertilized eggs are seen as human beings, yet Syrian refugees are treated as if they aren’t
I’m from valued morality in a society that values mortality
Yet, in spite of all this, I call it home
