The horrors that were witnessed
every step taken on an unmarked grave,
A whole nation under the sole of another's boot
And my great great  grandfather, taken as collateral damage
A red, blue and orange flag drenched in carnage
A young girl, holding to her mother-
Like a helium balloon, afraid to let go

For God seemed like a distant memory
A melody to a song long forgotten
And yet atop the tip of her tongue
Lain a battered Hallelujah
And with the vibration of each tired step
Louder it rang into posterity
Hallelujah

I Listen to the faint cry of her call,
A reminder of who I am, who she was
And not yet forgotten are the fights of our own blood
We must consecrate our past
Remember those that forged the ground on which we stand
Celebrate and carry on their strengths
The builders of this nation

This peice was inspired by my great grandmother who survived the Armenian genocide. I feel that most people, including myself, don't truly recognize the struggles past generations had to endure in order to bring us to where we are today.
