Please get up.
It’s warm outside,
and you’re missing the breeze
against your face,
the sun shining
heating your back.
You’re missing
the rest of your life.
Please.

Doesn’t your life seem ephemeral
Can you not see
sleeping is abysmal
And I know that you live in your gossamer head
but I think you can tell that you’re already dead
You’ve explored the world, seen all that you can
couldn’t you go for just one last stand

Against your aching bones,
embrace your will to live,
“but to the earth some special good doth give”
There’s time enough at last
your days are numbered
I don’t want
you to be this close only to fumble
Or fall like you did before
and break your evanescent state of war

Take your umbrella in trembling hands
step to the day, let your lungs expand
With lilting sound
and sumptuous breath
don’t let yours be a civil death
Fight to the end.
Fight and find
though you’re filled with dread
that you can get up
off that hospital bed.
