She lies awake all night,
What’s wrong with her?
Why is she crazy?
Why won’t the voices stop?

He lies awake all night,
Why is he so anxious?
Why can’t he love himself?
Why is nothing ever enough?

They lay awake all night.
Why does society see them so differently?
Why are they seen as monsters?
Why does society pretend it doesn’t exist?

It’s the stigma —
The shame.
The ignorance.
The denial.

It’s the stigma that needs to end.
That girl deserves to be accepted.
That boy deserves to feel like he is enough.
They deserve to feel like someone cares.

They deserve to be helped.

End the stigma.

The author's comments:

During mental health awareness week, we were writing poems in my creative writing class. I was reflecting on myself and my loved ones who are forced to deal with the stigma people put on mental illnesses. I hope from this poem people can see that yes, people struggle and can become a completely different person, but that doesn't mean we should just ignore it or shame it. They deserve help just like any other human being. Because of the stigmas put on mental illness, those who suffer from it feel ashamed, and that is exactly what we need to stop.
